Start living your best life: Minimalism for beginners
In a world driven by consumerism and constant accumulation, many people are finding solace in minimalism—a lifestyle that embraces simplicity, decluttering, and intentional living. The minimalist movement encourages us to focus on what truly brings us joy while shedding the excess baggage that weighs us down. Lets explore the process of becoming a minimalist with a special emphasis on finding balance and simplicity in every aspect of life.
The first step towards becoming a minimalist is to assess your current living space and belongings. Take a critical look at your possessions and ask yourself if each item serves a purpose or brings joy to your life.
I know this is a hard one for most people because the first initial response to getting rid of something is, “Well, I could use this eventually” or “This could come in handy some time.” Guilty! Sure, a year or two will come around when you are able to use this “thing” you held on to, but was it worth taking up that space for that long? So lets remove any duplicates or unnecessary items that do not add value and contribute to a clutter-free living space.
Mindset
Clutter does not just overwhelm our space, it overwhelms our minds. Minimalism is not just about physical decluttering; it’s a mindset shift as well. Begin focusing on what truly matters to you and prioritize your time, energy, and resources accordingly.
Minimalism encourages us to slow down and appreciate the present moment. Practice mindfulness and be fully present in your everyday activities. Take the time to appreciate a cup of tea or enjoy a conversation with a loved one without distractions. I absolutely love a mid day walk with my husband and daughter. It is always the highlight of my day spending time with them.
You don’t get these moments back and you are currently living them. These are the “good ol’ days”. By being mindful, you will find joy in simplicity and develop a deeper appreciation for the little things in life.
Wardrobe
Another way to minimize your lifestyle is a minimalist wardrobe. Owning fewer, high-quality pieces that you truly love wearing. Creating a capsule wardrobe will not only simplify getting dressed but also help reduce decision fatigue.
We have all be there, “Nothing in my closet fits me or looks good!”. But from an outsiders perspective, there’s ENDLESS outfits in your closet. By the time you’re finished finding an outfit that sets your mind at ease, you feel drained and don’t even want to go out anymore. Take the time to streamline your wardrobe by donating or selling clothes you no longer need. You’d be surprised by how many different outfits you could have by just having a few simple items in your wardrobe.
If you absolutely cannot live without your clothes, at least store them away by season. I know what you’re thinking, “Where am I going to put my clothes?!” In our house, we like to store our winter clothes in the summer and vice versa. Our bed has storage underneath so we put our clothes in bins and store them out of sight. This way our closet looks less cluttered and more organized! ** Tip: When the bins come out and are ready to rotate, this gives us the opportunity to evaluate pieces we want to keep or give away/sell so this method is a win-win! **
Digital
Lastly, a big one that I know I always need to work on is digital minimalism. Yes, in today’s world, this is a thing! It is essential to extend minimalism to our online lives as well. Streamline your digital presence by decluttering your inbox, unsubscribing from unnecessary email lists, and organizing your digital files.
Also, limiting your time spent on social media and create boundaries to prevent it from becoming a source of mindless consumption. Sometimes, too much digital time can scatter our minds. It’s important to come back and focus on the things that really matter to us.
Instead of focusing on acquiring material possessions, prioritize experiences that bring you joy and personal growth. Invest your time and resources in activities like traveling, trying new hobbies, or spending quality time with loved ones. Cultivate meaningful connections and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Becoming a minimalist is a personal journey that extends beyond simple decluttering. It’s about finding a balance between owning what you need and enjoying a clutter-free, simplified life. By embracing minimalism, we can shift our focus towards what truly matters—experiences, connections, and personal growth. Embrace the philosophy of minimalism, and you’ll find that the pursuit of balance and simplicity can lead to a more fulfilling life.
